Marketing is, essentially, the effort you take to promote and sell your company’s products and services. And unfortunately, the biggest mistake small businesses make is putting marketing absolutely last!

Any any given time, you or someone you know is in the market for something (looking to purchase something).

The buying process.

When you go to invest in a quality product or service, 99% of the time that process usually starts with research and careful consideration. And that usually means digging around online! Marketing can be seen as the art of influencing that process, in favor of your company. It is an amazingly nebulous and multi-faceted topic, and so while it would be nearly impossible to cover everything here, we’ll go through some of the key parts below.

Marketing can be anything from buying an advertisement in a magazine to being active on social media to get more leads. It is usually broken down into media / medium types, like digital marketing and print marketing.

ACTIVE VS. PASSIVE MARKETING

One of the most important breakdowns of marketing is the difference between active and passive marketing. Active marketing is actively paying to put your company in front of potential buyers, usually on an immediate but temporary basis. In many cases, active marketing is done to generate cold leads. Billboards, television commercials, e-mail blasts and direct mail are all examples of active marketing. Passive marketing is creating something (usually a blog, article, website, etc) that will pop up when someone is in the market for it.

Due to the nature of passive marketing, these potential customers are usually hot / warm leads (because they’ve shown interest in what you are selling). In a perfect world, companies would only need to use passive marketing, but many times companies cannot flourish on passive marketing alone. For this reason, it’s a good idea to get a nice mix / portfolio of the two, with a decided lean toward passive. Due to the fact that passive marketing usually engages warm and hot leads, it is preferred. Many companies will alternatively refer to this difference in active and passive marketing  as “outbound” vs. “inbound” marketing, with inbound meaning the leads are coming in (like with SEO), and outbound meaning the marketing efforts are going out (like a billboard).

Our job is to build a marketing roadmap for your business that blends the best of both worlds, and tracks tangible results for better marketing decisions down the road.

Let's talk about transparency.

Our industry is riddled with agencies that promise you the world when it comes to results and performance metrics for less than your monthly water bill. And unless you’re in a super niche market that has next to no competition – the likelihood that they are going to get you the leads your business needs is pretty slim.

We purposefully avoid this churn-and-burn business model of other agencies, by being a partner with you. And like any good partner, that means giving you access to your data on demand!

Some people ask - what is the difference between sales and marketing?

The way we see it, at least, is that marketing will many times be used to get leads and/or ‘warm’ the leads, and sales is what closes the deal. A great sales team and a great marketing team make one another’s jobs easier, and can truly be a beautiful marriage when everything falls into place. A great website with a clear and compelling message can sell, yes, both directly (via e-commerce) and indirectly (through its message), but many companies don’t sell something that you can simply pick up with your Paypal or Google payment account. They’re selling something that requires more than that. And so – a good website can ‘prime’ them, potentially whetting their appetites to make for a high percentage chance of sale later on.

Let’s take a look at an example. Say, for instance, you wanted to buy an apple for lunch. Somewhere nearby is a company that wants to sell you that apple. You’ve decided in your head that apples are worth one dollar, and that is what you’re willing to pay. A sales person might try to sell you the apple for two dollars, and convince you why it’s worth that. You would potentially decline. A marketer might describe the apple to you as a “crisp, delicious, organic, locally grown apple,” at which point two dollars begins to sound more reasonable. Once you have it in your head that you want one of those “crisp, delicious, organic, locally grown” apples, then a sales person might have no trouble getting you to buy it. The apple was marketed to you.

It also helps to know what type of buyer you’re marketing to. While there are many ways to break this down, one of the simplest is breaking your buyers into toward buyers and away buyers. A toward buyer is a buyer moving toward your product or service, meaning that they’re interested in what you have to offer, and they are primarily motivation is to purchase it. Toward buyers are usually the more relaxed of the two, because they’re not in any hurry to purchase. An away buyer is someone who is moving away from an inferior product or service, and their motivation is primarily to upgrade. Away buyers are usually unhappy with what they have currently, and so are usually more easily influenced by urgency (through their own urgency). It is important to make this distinction as it will help you market more effectively. To use the apple example, an away buyer would be someone who buys apples from your competitor down the street and is tired of getting worms, and a toward buyer is someone who is craving an apple for lunch.

Much of marketing is getting your products and services in front of the right audience. You likely wouldn’t get too far advertising your locally grown apples to people who are interested in fast food. But you stand a pretty good chance of advertising your apples to people who are interested in organic foods. This would be business to consumer (B2C) marketing and sales. You might even try advertising to a local bakery in an attempt to sell a large volume of apples at once, potentially at a discount. This would be business to business (B2B) marketing and sales.

Going into any marketing effort, you’ll want to know what your goals are, and what your budget is. Before even getting started, write down what you hope to achieve with your marketing project. Is it a stronger brand? Is it more recognition? Is it more website traffic? Is it more leads and sales?  It’s a good idea to keep good track of any efforts you make so that you can later determine which ones were worth it, and potentially, which ones were not. The experts at LovelyPixels can help your company choose the right marketing efforts, find the right audience, and get your company in front of potential customers.
